Deciding when to travel to Kenya is an important part of the planning process. The best season for your trip will depend on what you want to see and do.
Here is a quick guide to the best times of year to visit Kenya:
June to October is the dry season in Kenya, the bush is thin and wildlife is easier to spot as it gathers around water. To see the famous wildebeest migration, it’s best to book your trip between July and October.
From January to March is another excellent time of year to go on safari in Kenya.
It is possible to visit Kenya during the wet season, too. From November to May the scenery is green and lush, and newborn animals can be seen.
The only time of year we don’t recommend traveling to Kenya is from March to May due to the heavy rainfall.
With so much to see and do in Kenya, planning your trip can be a challenge. We’ve put together 3 Kenyan tour experiences to help you prepare your travel itinerary.
1
Masai Mara National Park tours offer one of Kenya’s best safari experiences. The highlight of the year is the wildebeest migration, but you’ll get to see incredible wildlife at any time of the year.
Starting point: Nairobi
Most people travel from Nairobi to Masai Mara by road. It takes around 5 to 6 hours to reach the park, and you can enjoy the Kenyan countryside on the way.
There are also flights from Wilson Airport in Nairobi to the Mara airstrip.
Duration: 3 to 7 days
Depending on your budget and how many days you’re staying in Kenya, Masai Mara safari tours last from around 3 (2 nights) to 7 days (6 nights).
On a 3-day tour, you’ll enjoy a full day in Masai Mara. You’ll be picked up from the camp early to ensure a full-day drive before returning in the evening.
Longer stays allow you to discover more of the park, and add additional activities, such as a hot air balloon ride, to your itinerary.
2
Amboseli National Reserve is another of Kenya’s most popular tourist parks. It is the place to go to see herds of elephants up close.
Lion, cheetah, giraffes, and hundreds of bird species can also be spotted.
Starting point: Nairobi
It’s a 4-hour drive from Nairobi to Amboseli National Park. The park lies at the bottom of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s tallest mountain.
Duration: full day- 2 days
Most people opt for a full-day trip from Nairobi or stay overnight at a safari lodge or camp. You’ll get the chance to capture incredible photos of Kilimanjaro, and see the elephants and other wildlife whilst out on safari.
3
Safaris aren’t the only option for adventurous travelers. Climbing Mount Kenya is another way to experience the wildlife and wilderness.
Mount Kenya has 3 peaks: Batian, Nelion, and Point Lenana. You should choose which to climb, and which route to take, depending on your climbing experience,
Starting point: Nairobi
The journey from Nairobi to nearby towns where you can stay takes around 4 hours. The base for your tour will depend on which route you will take.
Duration: 3 to 7 days
You can select from several different treks. One of the most popular is the Naro Moru trail, the shortest route to the Point Lenana summit. It is a steep climb, requiring good levels of fitness.
Another way to reach Point Lenana summit is via the Sirimon route. It takes longer, 4 to 6 days, but it's a more gradual ascent than the Naro Moru trail. Whichever you choose, you’ll be rewarded with incredible views.
